Corfu is one of the Ionian Islands, located on the western side of Greece. Along with Zakynthos, Kefalonia, and Ithaca, it’s known for its green landscapes, clear blue waters, and charming Venetian-style architecture. Unlike the Cycladic islands like Santorini and Mykonos, which are more dry and whitewashed, the Ionian Islands have a more lush and colorful vibe.
I visited Corfu with zero expectations, and honestly, the island completely surprised me. From its hidden beaches and pastel-colored villages to the mix of history and nature, it quickly became one of my favorite places in Greece. Whether you’re planning a laid-back beach escape or a more adventurous trip, Corfu has something for everyone.

How to get to Corfu
There are several ways to getting to Corfu:
- By plane: the easiest way to get to Corfu is by plane, flying to Corfu International Airport (CFU). It has direct flights from many European cities, and daily flights from Athens.
- By ferry: you can also reach Corfu by ferry. From mainland Greece, you can drive or go on a bus from Athens to Igoumenitsa port and catch a 1.5 hour ferry to Corfu. There are also international ferry routes from Italy and if you’re coming from Albania, there’s a quick ferry from Saranda that takes about 30–70 minutes.
Once you’re on the island, getting around by car or scooter is the best option. Just make sure to book in advance during peak season!
When to go to Corfu
- Peak season: the summer months (June through August) are the most popular time to visit Corfu. You can expect sunny days and perfect summer weather, but also be prepared for large crowds, higher prices, traffic congestion and difficulty finding accommodations or rental cars.
- Shoulder season: April-May and September-October are awesome times to visit Corfu. The weather is still great, there are way fewer crowds, and you’ll get much better deals accommodation and rentals.

Where to stay in Corfu
Corfu town
If you want to be in the heart of the action, Corfu Town (also called Kerkyra) is the place to stay. With its colorful buildings, cobbled streets and Venetian architecture, it’s perfect for strolling, dining and sightseeing. You’ll also be close to the Old Fortress and plenty of cute shops and cafes.

Paleokastritsa
For beach lovers and nature fans, Paleokastritsa is a dream. This coastal area in the western side of the island is known for its crystal-clear bays and peaceful vibe. It’s ideal for swimming, renting a boat, or just relaxing with a view. Great for couples and anyone wanting a slower pace.

Things to do in Corfu
Rent a car or a Vespa to get around
Even though you could rely on buses and/or taxis to get around Corfu, the best ways to explore the island is by renting a car or a Vespa.
The island is full of winding roads, hidden beaches, and hilltop villages that are hard to reach by public transport. A car gives you total flexibility, while a scooter adds a fun, adventurous twist and lets you skip traffic jams.
Just be ready for those hairpin turns!
Rent a boat for the day
Renting a boat is a must-do in Corfu. You can cruise along the coast, stop at quiet coves and swim in turquoise waters, all at your own pace. You don’t need a license for smaller boats, and you can also choose to rent with or without a captain/skipper depending on your comfort level.

Day trip to Paxos and Antipaxos
Paxos and Antipaxos are 2 tiny islands south of Corfu. They’re postcard-perfect!
Paxos is charming and low-key, while Antipaxos has some of the clearest, bluest water in all of Greece. You can join a group tour or hop on a private boat for the day. It’s 100% worth the trip.
Places to visit in Corfu
Corfu town
Corfu Town is a must-visit: it feels like Greece and Italy had a pretty little baby! This UNESCO World Heritage Site has a mix of Venetian and Greek influences that results in a unique charm that’s hard to resist. Stroll through narrow cobbled alleys, explore the Old Fortress, and treat yourself to a shopping spree. You’ll find plenty of adorable artisan shops selling handmade sandals, olive wood crafts, and locally made jewelry.
Faliraki beach
Faliraki Beach is a small hidden gem right next to Corfu Town. Tucked beneath the Old Fortress, this spot has crystal-clear water and a peaceful escape steps away from the bustle of the town center. It’s not a sandy beach, instead, you’ll find a stone terrace and a ladder leading straight into the sea, which makes it perfect for a quick dip. There’s also a cute beach bar nearby where you can grab a drink and soak up the local vibes.
Paleokastritsa
Paleokastritsa is one of the most picturesque spots on the island. It’s known for its stunning bays, cliffs, and its famous monastery on a hill. It’s a great place to choose as a base to explore the best beaches in the area.
Afionas
Afionas is a charming village on the way to Porto Timoni, and it’s well worth a stop. With its narrow stone alleys, colorful bougainvilleas, and traditional shops, Afionas looks like it belongs to a fairytale.
Porto timoni hike
This beach is a favorite for a reason, but be prepared! The hike to Porto Timoni is steep and rocky, so bring plenty of water, good sneakers, and sun protection. The reward: an unforgettable view and a swim in two crystal-clear bays.
La Grotta beach bar
Tucked into the cliffs near Paleokastritsa, this iconic beach bar is built right into the rocks. You can sip cocktails, cliff-jump, or swim in deep blue water. It’s a vibe!
Plane-spotting
One of the coolest (and most unexpected!) things to do in Corfu is watching planes land, just like Maho beach in Saint Maarten! Just google “Corfu airport plane spotting spot” and head to the narrow causeway right next to the runway of the island’s airport. You can watch planes fly right over your head as they come in for landing.
It’s surprisingly thrilling and makes for a great photo op, especially at sunset!
Beach-hopping in Corfu
Corfu has so many beautiful beaches, it’s almost hard to pick one!
