Mallorca Travel Guide

After 3 visits to Mallorca – also known as Majorca – and more yet to come, I regret not having visited it before.

I always had the image of Mallorca as a party destination, but oh boy, I was so wrong. As it happens with Ibiza, Mallorca is beautiful, epic, and perfect for all types of travelers: from honeymooners to the adventurous, families or luxury travelers.

Here’s all you need to know to plan your next trip to Mallorca – all the locations can be found at the end of this post!

Best Places to Visit in Mallorca

Palma de Mallorca

These are Palma de Mallorca’s top sights:

Calvià

Calvià is world-famous for partygoers, but it’s much more than that: I dare you to discover the other side of Calvià, beyond Magaluf parties.

Calvià is really charming. Do not miss Calvià-Vila and Es Capdellà, 2 beautiful Mediterranean towns that will make you discover the real Mallorca: traditional houses, markets, and beautiful stories are waiting for you.

Finca Galatzó is one of the most fascinating places to visit in Calvià. It’s perfect for hikers and those looking for stories. This place was home to Comte Mal – the Evil Count – back in the 15th century, and he’s allegedly still riding his horse every night…

Plus, Calvià is hometown 36 beaches, being the most beautiful ones El Mago, Calita dels Portals Nous, Caló d’en Pelliser, and Illetes.

Sóller & Port de Sóller

Sóller is one of the most visited towns in Mallorca, and that’s for a reason.

This area has its own personality, since it was isolated from the rest of the island until the tunnel was built 25 years ago.

Nowadays is a must in every road trip in Mallorca. You need to visit the cathedral, walk its beautiful alleways and have a drink or two at any of the terraces in the main square. The tram passes in between the terraces every few minutes, as if you were in Vietnam!

Sóller & Port de Sóller are connected by said tram, which is a really picturesque ride you should take if you have the time! Port Soller is perfect for a walk by the sea, enjoy an ice cream while relaxing in its sandy beach and if you’re like me, buy any of the baskets available in every shop as a souvenir.

The best hotel in the area? We cannot stop recommending Jumeirah Port Soller, a 5* hotel with dreamy sea views and one of the best sunsets in Mallorca.

Deià

Deià is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful villages in Mallorca.

It’s easy to get to Deià from Sóller by car. Get ready to get lost walking down its streets with a view to the sea. It really feels like stepping into a postcard!

There are many walking and cycling routes passing by this town. One of the routes is really easy, from Deià to the beach known as  Cala Deià. if you can, book a table with a view at Cas Patro March for an unforgettable lunch over the Mediterranean waters. Keep in mind that parking here is very limited.

The best hotel in Deia? No doubts: Belmond la Residencia is a dream come true.

Mallorca’s charming little towns

There’s no shortage of Mediterranean beauty in Mallorca. Make sure to visit as many charming towns as possible. They’re really special.

  • Valldemossa
  • Alcúdia
  • Fornalutx
  • Santanyí

Other places to visit in Mallorca

  • Cap de Formentor: the tip of the island, and one of the most beautiful areas in Mallorca. Learn more about it here.
  • Drach Caves: a must for everyone traveling to Mallorca. These caves are home to one of the largest underwater lakes in the world. It’s recommended to book the tour in advance.
  • Es Pontàs: a natural arch rock formation that will take your breath away.
  • Sa Foradada: an emblematic rock formation – totally recommended for sunset!
  • Malgrats islands: if you want to make your trip unforgettable, add this scenic boat ride to your list.
  • Botanicactus: a botanical garden with thousands of cacti species. It’s the perfect place for those who love taking Instagram photos!

Best Beaches in Mallorca

As the neighbor island Ibiza, Mallorca has one of the most incredible beaches. The colors of the water are just insane. Get ready to discover havens of white sandy beaches and unspoiled coves nestled between natural pools of crystal clear turquoise waters.

After 3 visits to Mallorca, these are my favorite beaches in the island:

  • Formentor
  • Cala Murta
  • Calo d’es Moro
  • Cala Pi
  • Cala Figuera
  • Cala Llombards
  • Es Trenc
  • Cala Fornells
  • Cala S’Almonia
  • Cala Varques
  • Cala Mondragón
  • Cala Sa Calobra
  • Playa de Muro

Adventure travel in Mallorca

Mallorca is perfect for hiking, cycling, and enjoying nature through active tourism. Only in Calvià there are 150km of cycling routes and 100km of hiking routes. You will fall in love with the UNESCO Tramuntana mountains along the northwest coast. You can go on multi-day hikes as there are mountain refuges with affordable rates available.

We last visited Mallorca in October, when the triathlon Challenge Peguera takes place. It was really exciting to see the athletes! It’s a great time to visit Calvià as the atmosphere is really cool and the traffic is closed due to the challenge.

Must-try food in Mallorca

As everywhere else in Spain, Mallorca is a real pleasure in gastronomy

  • Ensaimadas (not vegan): traditional dessert from Mallorca.
  • Llongets: traditional bread from Mallorca.
  • Coca de Patata (potato cake): typical dessert from Valldemossa.
  • Pa amb oli (bread with oil): they say there are 2 types of people, the ones that put oil on the bread first and the ones that put the tomato first. Either way, pa amp ole is always delicious in Mallorca!
  • Sobrasada (not vegan): traditional type of sausage from Mallorca.

Twice a year in Calvià, in April and October, they celebrate the Mostra de Cuines with affordable prices in several restaurants in the area. We had a beautiful meal by the sea at Balneario Illetas.

If you want to splurge, then pay a visit to Zaranda restaurant, the only 2 Michelin starred restaurant in Mallorca, located in Castell Son Claret.

Where to stay in Mallorca

There’s a huge variety of options when it comes to accommodation in Mallorca, from luxury hotel chains to boutique and agriturismo properties.

There’s no doubt why some of these hotels are chosen by many every year to celebrate a memorable wedding.

I’ve enjoyed a staycation at Castell Son Claret during my last time in Mallorca and I totally recommend it. It’s beautiful, the restaurants and services are top-notch and it’s the perfect wedding venue, too.

Getting around Mallorca

Getting around Mallorca is easier with your own rental car. Plus, it’s such a beautiful experience! There’s no shortage of scenic drives in Mallorca.

As always, I recommend Centauro as a trustworthy rental car company in Spain. I’ve rented with them multiple times and it’s always been great.

There’s public transportation and taxis available, too. Public transportation is not always the most convenient option, though, and relying on taxis all the time can get quite expensive if you want to move around the island.
