How to get to Montenegro
There are several ways to getting to Montenegro:
- By plane: the easiest way to get to Montenegro is by plane, flying to Podgorica airport (TGD) or Tivat airport (TIV). You could also fly to Dubrovnik (DUB) and connect to Montenegro by land. There are direct flights to any of these cities from many European and UK cities.
- By bus/car: you can reach Montenegro by bus if you’re traveling from Croatia, Serbia or Albania.
- By ferry: you can also reach Montenegro by ferry from Bari, in Italy.

Kotor
Kotor is hands down my favorite city in Montenegro. If you love cats, it will be your favorite place, too!
This stunning medieval town features the most iconic Old Town in the country, nestled in a dramatic fjord-like bay, is full of charm and history. You can still see the Venetian influence everywhere, especially in the architecture in the old town.
Places to visit:
- Kotor Fortress: if you’re fit and you feel like climbing 1350 steps, then head to Kotor Fortress. It offers the best views over the Bay of Kotor!
- Square of Arms and the iconic Clock Tower: right after you enter Kotor’s Old Town through the main gate, you’ll find yourself in the Square of Arms, the town’s central hub. It’s lined with historic buildings, cafés, and shops—but the real star here is the Clock Tower, one of Kotor’s most recognizable landmarks and a perfect photo spot.
- Kotor market: one of the most interesting visits in town is the market, where I may or may not have bought too many olives!
- Pay a visit to main churches in Kotor: St. Tryphon’s cathedral,
- The cats of Kotor: ok, maybe not a “place” exactly, but you can’t visit Kotor without noticing and petting its most beloved residents: the cats! They’re now part of the identity of this town, and even have their own souvenir shop and museum.
- Insider tip: Kotor is a popular port of call for many cruises, so visit early in the morning before the crowds for a more peaceful experience.
Budva
Budva is famous for its vibrant nightlife, beautiful sandy beaches, and charming old town.
Spend your day sunbathing on Mogren Beach or wandering the historic streets within the city walls, and as the sun sets, the town comes alive at the bars and live music. Grab your cocktail and enjoy your night!
Perast
Perast is a peaceful, picture-perfect town on Kotor Bay, known for its baroque architecture and waterfront charm.
Mandatory: take a boat ride to the tiny islands of Our Lady of the Rocks and Saint George. Both offer fascinating history and stunning photo ops.
- Insider tip: Grab a Moritz Eis gelato by the harbor and watch the boats drift by for a relaxing vibe.
Our Lady of the Rocks
Just off the coast of Perast lies Our Lady of the Rocks, one of the most unique and picturesque spots in Montenegro.
This tiny man-made island is home to a beautiful 17th-century Roman Catholic church with a striking blue dome and a fascinating story. According to legend, local sailors created the island by dropping rocks in the bay after surviving a shipwreck, something that’s still commemorated every July 22nd with a tradition called Fašinada.
Boats to the island leave regularly from Perast and Kotor and take just a few minutes: totally worth the trip for the views alone!
Sveti Stefan
Sveti Stefan looks like a postcard come to life. It’s a tiny, luxury island village connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway. It’s super exclusive, only accesible to hotel guests staying in the island, but you can still admire it from the public beach nearby.
- Insider tip: head to St. Sava church to find the most iconic viewpoint overlooking Sveti Stefan.
Jaz Beach
Jazz Beach is known as one of the best beaches in Montenegro. With crystal-clear waters, this beach is perfect for snorkeling and other water sports!
It’s a great beach for everyone, with a mix of chill vibes and fun activities: think beach bars, sun loungers, water sports, and plenty of space to relax.
Porto Montenegro
Porto Montenegro is a sleek, modern marina and luxury resort packed with yachts, high-end shops, and gourmet restaurants. It really reminded me to Marbella!
It’s the place to see and be seen if you’re into glitzy vibes and designer boutiques.
