Where to stay in Porto: Best Areas and Hotels

If you want to find out where to stay in Porto, you’re in the right place.

Ribeira

Best for: first-timers.

Ribeira is the most picturesque area in Porto, on the bank of the Douro River.

If you decide to stay in Ribeira, you will be in the middle of the touristy action. Make the most out of it enjoying sunset drinks by the river and do not miss the 6 bridges cruise: it starts and ends in Ribeira and within 50 minutes you’ll get to see the highlights of Porto. 100% recommended.

Recommended in Ribeira:

Luxury: Pestana Vintage Hotel

Hotel: Eurostars Porto Douro

My favorite pick in Ribeira is Eurostars Porto Douro, an affordable 4* hotels with the best views and an amazing breakfast buffet. Plus, they have some amazing rooftops views to enjoy sunset with privacy!

Downtown area / Baixa and Clérigos

Best for: party-goers.

Downtown features some of the most touristy spots in Porto, including the insta-famous Igreja do Carmo and Lello Library.

If you’re staying here, book your ticket in advance to go to the top of Clerigos Tower: you’ll get fantastic 360º views from up there.

Located on top of a hill, this area is the best for trendy cafés, instagram photos, shopping and of course, to party!

Recommended in Clérigos:

 Infante Sagres

Barrio das Artes / Cedofeita

Best for: hipsters.

Fun fact: Rua Miguel Bombarda in Cedofeita is the street with more art galleries in Europe!

Art is everywhere in this area: you’ll find art galleries, cool shops and cafés – our top pick is Rota do Cha.

For sunset, do not miss the beautiful views from Jardins do Palacio de Cristal.

Gaia

Best for: dreamy views to Porto.

Technically, Gaia is not part of Porto: it’s the neighbor from the other side of the river Douro.

However, given its proximity and the gorgeous views to Porto from there, it’s not a crazy idea to stay there o explore Porto: it literally takes 2 minutes to cross the Luis I Bridge on foot.

Plus, a trip to Porto is never complete if you don’t visit Gaia: it’s the place to go to visit the port wine caves, enjoy the street art and yet again, the views to Porto.

Foz do Douro

Best for: a fancy escape.

Foz do Douro is the fancy area of Porto and is often overlooked by tourists – it’s such a hidden gem!

This area is perfect for those looking for a luxury escape, especially for foodies as there are 3 Michelin starred restaurants in this area: Pedro Lemos, Ichiban and Cafeína.

If you decide to stay in Foz do Douro, it’s recommended to have your own car to move around.

Apartment: Flattered to be in Porto
